Copy Dynamics Live db to a test db, excluding Change Log?

Hi, I am very new to Nav Dynamic platform, so hope my question isn't too stupid!

Currently, in order to help investigate and resolve issues experienced by users, we copy of our Live db to a Test db, on an as-and-when required basis.  This often means that we are unable to view the most current version of documents created by users, as we can sometimes have weeks go by without new copy of Live to Test.  I find this frustrating as it means we have to recreate the documents in Test db instead, which isn't ideal, as you can imagine.

Recently I asked why we weren't able to run a nightly routine which would copy Live to the Test db, to allow us to check problems on virtually real-time data.  I was told that this wasn't possible due to the size of the Live db, that it would take too long and may crash our servers.  Sorry, I don't know how big the db is.  What was mentioned was that it may be down to the fact we are having to copy over the Change Log during this process and as this is constantly updated in real-time, it's too large to copy on a nightly basis.

I'm wondering if there is any way we can either:

1. exclude the Change Log from the proposed nightly copying process; or

2. have a static copy of the Change Log copied during the proposed nightly routine

Also, is there any way to have the Change Log remain static until we ask it to search for specific data?  Currently our Change Log can take anywhere between 5-30 minutes to open, then takes even longer to search for specific data criteria.

Hope this all makes sense!!  Looking forward to hearing from the experts out there :)

Kind regards
